How the paver sand calculator works

A paver installation uses two different sand layers that serve different jobs. Bedding sand is a thicker layer, typically 1 inch deep, spread and screeded dead flat over the compacted gravel base — it's what the pavers actually rest in and get leveled into, so it needs to be uniform in depth across the whole patio or walkway. Finding how much you need is simple volume math: paver area times the bedding depth in feet, converted to cubic yards for ordering bulk sand.

Jointing sand is different — it's swept into the narrow gaps between the laid pavers, not spread as a layer underneath. Polymeric jointing sand, which hardens slightly when wetted to lock the joints and resist weeds and ant intrusion, is sold by weight, and coverage depends on the joint width: narrower 1/8 to 3/16 inch joints use roughly 0.6 pounds per square foot, while wider 1/4 to 3/8 inch joints need closer to 1 pound per square foot.

Neither sand layer replaces the compacted gravel base underneath — that base, typically 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone, provides the structural support and drainage a paver surface needs to resist settling and heaving over time. Always check your specific sand product's coverage chart for the exact rate at your paver's actual joint width, since manufacturer figures vary somewhat.

Bedding depth and base thickness recommendations follow ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) installation guidelines; polymeric sand coverage rates are based on typical manufacturer charts (e.g. Techniseal, Alliance Gator).

The formula explained

Bedding volume

= area × (depth⁄12) ÷ 27. A 200 ft² patio, 1 in deep: 200 × (1/12) ÷ 27 = 0.62 yd³.

Jointing sand

= area × lb⁄ft². At 0.6 lb/ft² (narrow joints): 200 × 0.6 = 120 lb.

Wide joints

Same 200 ft² at 1.0 lb/ft²: 200 lb of jointing sand.

Worked example

A 350 sq ft patio, 1.5 in bedding depth, wide joints.

Bedding ft³: 350 × (1.5/12) = 43.75 ft³
Bedding yd³: 43.75 ÷ 27 = 1.62 yd³
Jointing: 350 × 1.0 = 350 lb
Bags (est.): 7 bags of 50 lb polymeric sand

Sand type matters as much as quantity. Bedding sand should be coarse, washed concrete sand (sometimes called C-33 sand) rather than fine masonry or play sand, since coarse sand compacts and drains more predictably under load. Jointing sand is a separate product entirely — polymeric sand blends fine sand with a water-activated binder, and it should never be substituted with plain bedding sand, since it needs to stay in place under foot traffic and resist washing out during rain.

Real-world context

A backyard patio project is the most common use case. A 150 sq ft patio with a standard 1-inch bedding depth and narrow joints needs 150 × (1/12) = 12.5 cubic feet of bedding sand (about 0.46 cubic yards) plus 150 × 0.6 = 90 lb of polymeric jointing sand — roughly two 50 lb bags of jointing sand once you round up for spillage and joint variation.

A narrow front walkway scales down proportionally. At 60 sq ft with the same 1-inch bedding and narrow joints, that's 60 × (1/12) = 5 cubic feet of bedding sand (0.19 cubic yards) and 60 × 0.6 = 36 lb of jointing sand — small enough that many suppliers sell bedding sand by the bag rather than requiring a bulk delivery for a job this size.

Larger paver driveways push into bulk-delivery territory. A 600 sq ft driveway laid 1.5 inches deep with wider joints needs 600 × (1.5/12) = 75 cubic feet of bedding sand, or 2.78 cubic yards, plus 600 × 1.0 = 600 lb of jointing sand — at that volume, ordering bulk bedding sand by the yard from a landscape supplier is typically cheaper than buying dozens of individual bags.

Common misconceptions

"More bedding sand under the pavers means a stronger, more stable patio." Not the case. Bedding sand's job is to provide a thin, level cushion for setting the pavers, not structural support — a bed thicker than about 1 to 1.5 inches actually makes the surface less stable, since the pavers can shift or settle unevenly within a deeper, looser layer. Structural support comes from the compacted gravel base underneath.

"Regular play sand works fine for jointing between pavers." It doesn't hold up. Plain sand washes out of the joints with rain and gets displaced by foot traffic, letting weeds take root and ants tunnel in within a season or two. Polymeric sand contains a binder that activates when wetted, locking it in place — it costs more per bag but avoids re-sanding the joints every year.
