Panels overlap at each seam, so the effective coverage width is slightly less than the panel's full width.

How the metal roofing calculator works

Metal roofing goes up in long panels that run from the eave to the ridge, overlapping their edges at each seam for a weathertight fit. Because of that overlap, a panel's effective coverage — how much roof width it actually adds — is a little narrower than its full manufactured width. Dividing the roof width by that coverage figure gives the number of panels needed across the roof.

Multiplying the panel count by the slope length — the distance from eave to ridge along the roof surface — gives the total linear footage of panel material. Roof area is reported for reference as width times slope length, the true sloped area rather than the flat footprint.

The waste allowance accounts for trim at hips, valleys, and ridges, plus end cuts and any mistakes, following the same coverage-rate logic manufacturers publish for their panel systems. A simple gable roof needs less waste than a roof with several hips and valleys, since each of those features consumes extra panel length in angled cuts.

Panel coverage, seam overlap, and fastening practices follow the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) Metal Roofing Manual and manufacturer installation guides referenced by IRC Section R905.10.

The formula explained

Panels across

= ceil(width(in) ÷ coverage(in)). A 40 ft (480″) roof, 36″ coverage: 480⁄36 = 13.3 → 14 panels.

With waste

14 × 1.10 (10% waste) = 15.4 → 16 panels.

Linear feet

16 panels × 18 ft slope = 288 linear ft of panel to order.

Worked example

A 60 ft wide barn roof, 24 ft slope, 24″ coverage panels, 15% waste for hips.

Panels across: 720⁄24 = 30
With waste: 30 × 1.15 = 34.5 → 35 panels
Linear feet: 35 × 24 = 840 ft
Roof area: 60 × 24 = 1440 ft²

A 45 ft wide home addition with a 20 ft slope, wider 36-inch panels, and a heavier 15% waste allowance for multiple hips needs ceil(540⁄36) = 15 base panels, jumping to 18 panels once waste is applied — for 360 linear feet across 900 sq ft of roof, illustrating how a complex roofline can push the panel count up by 20% even on a moderate-sized job.

A large 80 ft agricultural building with a 30 ft slope, 24-inch panels, and a standard 10% waste allowance needs ceil(960⁄24) = 40 base panels, rising to 44 panels with waste — for 1,320 linear feet of material across 2,400 sq ft, the kind of order where panels are typically factory-cut to the full 30 ft slope length to avoid any horizontal seam.

Common misconceptions

"Panel width and coverage width are the same number." They are not. A panel manufactured at 36 inches wide might only provide 34 inches of actual coverage once it overlaps the adjacent panel at the seam — always use the coverage figure from the spec sheet, not the raw panel width, or the panel count will come up short.

"Metal roofing has almost no waste since panels are cut to length." Waste still adds up. Ridge caps, valley flashing, hip trim, and end cuts around vents and chimneys all consume extra material beyond the flat field area — a 10-15% allowance is standard even for panels cut to exact slope length.
